853 ST. JOHN STREET

HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE

853 St. John Street was built in 1886 for Albert and Addie Hammers for $1,500. The home was built by George L. Coggdon. Albert was employed by the I.C. Company. The Hammers maintained the property until 1929 when Addie Hammers passed away. He daughter, Laura, lived on Spring Street and was responsible for the sale.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

853 St. John Street is considered a Gable Front and Wing cottage and has remained unaltered except for some minor alterations. The home is of the vernacular typology and were built in large numbers throughout the United States near the turn of the 19th century. The addition of the side gable creates the L-shape associated with Gable Front and Wing homes. It is also typical to see a shed roof between the L that makes up the two wings.
