501 ARLINGTON AVENUE

HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE

500 Arlington Avenue considered a Dutch Colonial Style house, was for many years known as a “Sears” house. The error was not corrected until the emergence in the 1990s of mail order catalogs from other companies. This house is actually from a competitor of Sears, Chicago-based Harris Brothers Company. It was built in 1925 for Herbert C. Richmann.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

An identifying characteristic of the Dutch Colonial is the dual-pitched roof, known as a gambrel roof. This gambrel roof is atypical in that the lower portion is almost vertical. Harris Brothers was the only mail order home company to use this variant. Typical Colonial Revival features include the paired windows, elaborated front door, and round porch columns.
