476 ARLINGTON AVENUE
HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE
476 Arlington Avenue was built in 1906 for John and Mary Marvyne. As many did in this neighborhood, John worked as a foreman at the Elgin National Watch Factory. He passed away in 1922 leaving the home to Mary who continued to live there until 1930. She then rented the home until 1937 when she sold it to the next owners.
ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
Similar to 485 Arlington, 476 Arlington Avenue is also classified as an American Foursquare with classical revival detailing. The home has subtle differences compared to 485 Arlington as it is an earlier example includes a smaller dormer, large parlor window with art glass, the absence of 2nd floor banding and a wider elevation. The home received a City of Elgin Historic Rehabilitation Grant in 2021 which included removal of the 1950s aluminum siding, uncovering the original siding and recreated missing architectural elements bringing the home back to its 1906 classic look.
