HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE

373 Standish Street was built in 1924 for Arthur James and his wife, Grace.  Arthur was born in Illinois in 1886 with his parents emigrating from Wales. Arthur married Grace DePew who also was born in Illinois in 1887. Her parents, Leonidas and Mary Ella Scott DePew, were natives of Illinois. Grace and Arthur had one son, Lyle D. who was born in 1913. Grace and Arthur remained at 373 Standish Street until Arthur’s death in 1967. Grace passed away 20 years later. 

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

The Arthur and Grace James home is a one-and-a-half-story craftsman style, masonry bungalow exhibiting a clipped gable roof with a clipped gable dormer that is placed on its west elevation. Other elements that are typical of the bungalow type includes 373 Standish Street’s raised, partial width front porch that can be enclosed during winter months and opened during summer months as well as its prominent west elevation chimney flanked by two single pane windows.
