1036 HILL AVENUE

HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE

1036 Hill Avenue was constructed in 1926 for Cleytus and Edna Krunnfuss for $3,500. Cleytus was born in 1899 to parents who were both born in Illinois. He worked as a mechanic at the Elgin Street Sweeper Factory. The Krunnfuss family remained at 1036 Hill for 42 years when the moved to Wisconsin in 1968. 

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

1036 Hill Avenue is a 1.5 story structure is classified as a bungalow as it exhibits key characteristics of the type including exterior cladding of brick on the first story and cedar shingles on the upper story, low-pitched roof, raised entry, dormers on either side of the house, an exterior fireplace chimney and decoration in earth-tone colors. The projecting eaves, 3 and 5 over 1 double-hung windows, and a deep open porch which extends half the width of the house adorn this Arts and Crafts style bungalow. Worthy of special note is the pedimented clipped gable roof which is an uncommon feature among 1920s bungalows but relatively common in Elgin.
